Our Frequently Asked Questions
Our Candles and Candle Care
We avoid using pure essential oils in our candles. While essential oils are often considered the cleanest choice for providing fragrance to products, they are highly volatile and can evaporate quickly when exposed to heat or a flame. That volatility can lead to unstable scent throw, uneven burn, or rapid degradation instead of a clean, consistent fragrance release. Beyond performance concerns, essential oils can pose genuine hazards for pets.
We have a commitment to both safety and performance and instead use a carefully curated selection of high quality natural and synthetic fragrance oils sourced from the most reputable suppliers in Australia and France. All of our fragrance oils are independently tested for compliance with safety guidelines (e.g. by International Fragrance Association, IFRA); and they are formulated free from parabens and phthalates.
Perfectly uniform candles are often achieved through synthetic additives that stabilise wax against heat and light. We intentionally leave these out, prioritising a low-tox formulation over cosmetic perfection. This means natural changes such as surface sweating or wax pulling away from the vessel may occur. These are purely aesthetic and won’t affect performance. With the right care and maintenance, your candle will perform beautifully from first light to last.
A well maintained candle burns brighter and lasts longer. We use a 100% natural and biodegradable coconut wax which burns slower, cooler and cleaner than soy wax candles. As a result, a full melt pool may not occur until halfway down the glass vessel.
For the best experience:
- Ensure candle is on a flat even surface, away from objects.
- Keep away from drafts to ensure an even distribution of heat.
- Always trim the wick to 5mm before lighting.
- For our 400g Core Collection candles, please allow 4+ hours for the initial burn so that the melt pool has a greater chance to reach the edge of the vessel. Don't worry if it doesn't get there, it should do by halfway down. If in the event the wax hang up continues, please see troubleshooting options below or contact us for some more tips and tricks.
- For our 60g mini candles in The Scent Journey Discovery Set and our 180g Limited Edition candle, please burn for 2-3 hours initially. Don't worry if the wax does not reach a full melt pool, it should get there by halfway down.
- To extinguish your candle simply dip the wick into the liquid wax pool and recenter, or use a candle snuffer or spoon. Avoid blowing your candle out.
- If the wick is no longer centred, use a matchstick or spoon to push it back into a central position while the wax is still soft.
- Let wax reset and cool completely before relighting.
- Discontinue burning your candle when only 10mm of wax remains in the vessel.
- To reuse your vessel once the candle is finished fill it with boiling water and allow the water to cool completely. Any wax residue will float to the surface and can be removed easily. Wipe any remaining wax out with paper towel then wash the glass with dishwashing liquid. Ensure all wax residue is disposed in the rubbish and not in the sink to avoid pipe blockages.
We have tested our candle formulation extensively for close to two years and confidently believe our products should and will burn perfectly. However, candle performance is heavily impacted by its placement and ongoing maintenance. In most instances, the trouble shooting tips below will have your candle performing its best.
- Melt pool not reaching the edges?Next time you burn the candle ensure it is for an extended period of time. Coconut wax burns slower and at a lower temperature than soy and therefore can take longer to reach a full melt pool. This often doesn't occur until halfway down the vessel. With a soy candle this is called tunnelling but usually with coconut wax this is called a wax hang up. Additional tips for tunnelling are below.
- Flame too intense and creating soot or sparks? It's likely the wick is too long. Ensure it is trimmed to 5mm. Any soot on the edges can be wiped clean with paper towel.
- Flame too weak? The wick may have been trimmed too low and is being flooded by wax as it melts. Try spooning out some excess liquid wax (make sure to dispose of the excess in the rubbish not sink!) Let the candle cool and reset before lighting again.
Please contact us if you aren't experiencing a perfect burn and we'll help with more tips and tricks!
Tunnelling occurs when wax melts only in the centre, leaving wax around the edges. This is a common occurrence in soy wax candles rather than coconut wax, but in the event this is happening follow these steps to get your candle back to glowing perfectly:
- Ensure wick is trimmed to 5mm in length.
- Wrap foil around the top of the candle (leaving an opening in the centre).
- Burn for 2+ hours allowing heat to build up and increase the melt pool.
- Once the surface melts evenly, your candle is reset. You may need to remove some excess liquid wax (dispose of in the rubbish and not the sink) to ensure the wick is not flooded.
