imperfections

Perfectly uniform candles are often achieved through synthetic additives that stabilise wax against heat and light. We intentionally leave these out, prioritising a low tox formulation over cosmetic perfection. This means natural changes such as surface sweating or wax pulling away from the vessel may occur. These are purely aesthetic and won’t affect performance. With the right care and maintenance, your candle will perform beautifully from first light to last.

trimming the wick

A wick maintained at the appropriate length will ensure no soot or sparks and a beautiful even flame. We use specifically designed and manufactured wicks that are self trimming, however this process still requires your input to remove the tip of the wick and dispose of it so that your candle continues to burn perfectly. A purpose designed wick trimmer, whilst beautiful is not necessary and you'll find that after a burn your wick tip can be gently brushed to release it then then remove. As a guide we recommend trimming your wick to approximately 5mm.

the first burn

As with all candles, the first burn is the most important as it sets the candle up to burn evenly for all future burns. However, our 100% coconut wax behaves a little differently to more commonly used soy wax. While achieving a full melt pool to the edges of the vessel is always the goal, it’s completely normal to see some wax hangup on the sides during early burns. This typically resolves itself as the candle reaches around halfway through its life. For best results, we recommend burning our larger candles for 4+ hours initially, and 2–3 hours for the minis in The Scent Journey Discovery Set and limited edition sizes.

extinguish the flame

To extinguish your candle, gently dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it back upright, or use a candle snuffer or spoon. This helps prevent smoke, keeps the wick primed for the next burn, and maintains a clean candle surface. Avoid blowing out the flame, as this can cause excess smoke and disrupt the wick.

When approximately 10mm of wax remains in the base of your vessel, it's time to say goodbye to your candle. Our vessels can be placed into curbside recycling or can be filled with boiling water to lift any wax residue and washed to be repurposed.

trouble shooting

If your candle isn’t burning quite as expected, have a look through the tips below for a few simple tweaks or feel free to get in touch with us.

  • If your candle is tunnelling allow a longer burn, or use a temporary foil wrap around the top of the vessel to help the wax melt evenly.
  • If the flame is too large extinguish the candle, allow it to cool, trim the wick, and relight.
  • If the flame is very small or struggles to stay lit, gently remove excess wax around the wick and ensure the candle is in a draft-free space.
  • If the wick is sparking extinguish the candle, trim the wick once cool, and relight.
  • If you notice soot reposition the candle away from drafts, trim the wick, and enjoy a cleaner burn.
safety

Always enjoy your candle within sight and place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts. Keep flames clear of anything that could catch light, and position your candle well out of reach of children and pets. Avoid moving the candle while the wax is warm or liquid, and allow it to cool completely before handling. A little mindfulness helps keep every moment calm, safe, and beautifully lit.
